BUENOS AIRES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Tickets for Argentina's home friendly against Panama sold out in less than two hours on Thursday as local fans scrambled for the chance to see the newly crowned world champions.
The Argentine football association made 63,000 tickets available for the match on March 23, with fans paying up to 240 U.S. dollars for the chance to see Lionel Messi and company at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.
Hundreds of thousands of fans were left disappointed when the website of online ticket retailer Deportick collapsed soon after sales began at 2:00 p.m. local time.
"The virtual queue exceeded a million people shortly after the start of ticket sales, which is equivalent to more than 15 Monumental stadiums," Argentina's state-owned news agency Telam reported.
The match will be the Albiceleste's first outing since the team's penalty shootout victory over France in the FIFA World Cup final in Lusail, Qatar on December 18, 2022.
Argentina's first World Cup triumph since 1986 sparked frenzied celebrations in the South American country. More than five million people flocked to the streets of Buenos Aires to welcome their heroes in an open-top bus parade two days after the final.
