BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Teenage substitute Javier Morales struck late as Boca Juniors returned to the top of Argentina's Primera Division standings on Sunday with a 1-0 home victory over Velez Sarsfield.
19-year-old Morales, who replaced Guillermo Fernandez in the 73rd minute, latched onto Alan Varela's pass before sliding an angled finish past goalkeeper Leonardo Burian.
The match finished in a fractious manner as Velez pair Francisco Ortega and Valentin Gomez and Boca's Luiz Vazquez were each shown straight red cards for violent conduct.
The result at La Bombonera left Boca with 42 points from 22 games, one point ahead of second-placed Atletico Tucuman. Velez are 27th in the 28-team standings with 16 points.
Earlier, River Plate kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish with a 3-0 away win over Argentinos Juniors.
Juan Fernando Quintero, Lucas Beltran and Agustin Palavecino all struck second-half goals as Marcelo Gallardo's men moved to sixth in the standings, seven points behind Boca. Argentinos Juniors dropped to eighth, two points further back.
In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Patronato won 2-1 at home to Atletico Tucuman and Lanus prevailed 1-0 at Talleres Cordoba.
