LIMA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Goalkeeper Daniel Britto made nine saves as 10-man Internacional held hosts Melgar to a goalless draw in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana quarterfinal on Thursday.
Bidding for a place in their first continental semifinal, the Peruvian outfit dominated for most of the match, controlling almost two thirds of possession and having 20 shots on goal.
The Brazilian side was reduced to 10 men just after the hour mark when Alexandre Zurawski was shown a second yellow card for violent conduct.
Even with a numerical advantage, the hosts were unable to find a way past 24-year-old Britto at the Monumental Stadium in Arequipa.
The return leg will be played in Porto Alegre on August 11.
The Copa Sudamericana is South America's equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, and the winner will earn a berth in next year's Copa Libertadores, the continent's premier club competition.
