WUHAN, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The gross domestic product (GDP) of central China's Hubei Province in 2021 surpassed 5 trillion yuan (about 787.6 billion U.S. dollars) for the first time, Wang Zhonglin, Hubei's governor said at the seventh session of the 13th Hubei Provincial People's Congress on Thursday.
The figure is a 12.9-percent increase from the previous year, Wang added.
Hard-hit by the coronavirus outbreak, Hubei's economy experienced a free fall in the first quarter of 2020 but the effective anti-virus measures have led to a relatively fast recovery after the epidemic subsided. The province's GDP in 2020 recovered to over 95 percent of the previous year's level.
