Inter Miami CF loaned defenseman Leandro Gonzalez Pirez to Argentina's Club Atletico River Plate on Monday.
The deal runs through 2023 and includes an option to purchase the 29-year-old Buenos Aires native.
Gonzalez Pirez tallied four assists in 30 starts in his second season with Inter Miami in 2021. He has five goals and 11 assists in 141 career MLS matches (all starts) for Atlanta United (2017-19) and Miami.
"We continue to make moves with the intention of best positioning our roster moving forward and we feel that this loan gives us options to do so. We're also pleased for Leandro to be able to return to his former club and wish him well during his loan," Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson said in a news release.
Gonzalez Pirez began his pro career at River Plate, rising through their academy ranks before appearing in 35 games from 2011-13. He has also played in Argentina with Tigre and Estudiantes, and with Tijuana in Liga MX.
Gonzalez Pirez wasn't the only MLS player loaned to River Plate on Monday. Austin FC sent midfielder Tomas Pochettino to the Argentina powerhouse on a one-year deal with a purchase option.
