Inter Miami CF aim to extend several streaks on Friday night when they host the slumping New York Red Bulls.
Inter Miami CF (9-9-5, 32 points) have won three straight 1-0 decisions and registered a shutout in each of their last four matches to reside one point behind seventh-place Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference. Overall, the hosts are riding a six-match unbeaten string (5-0-1) and are 7-1-3 in their last 11 heading into their encounter with the Red Bulls (6-11-5, 23 points).
Defender Christian Makoun scored his first MLS goal after converting a penalty kick in injury time to lift Inter Miami CF to a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC on Tuesday.
"If we start getting ahead of ourselves, if we start thinking about the glory at the end of the road, we will fail," Inter Miami CF Phil Neville said. "We cannot afford any slips."
Inter Miami CF played without Gonzalo Higuain (team-leading nine goals) as he deals with a slight back strain, but the Argentine forward is expected to draw back into the lineup on Friday.
"I knew this would be a real tough week, making sure we have real freshness on Friday is massively important, but also to utilize our full squad," Neville said. "I'm a coach that likes to rotate, to give opportunities to those that have been fighting so hard."
While Inter Miami CF have been red-hot, the Red Bulls have been ice-cold with a 1-6-4 record in their last 11 matches overall and 1-8-2 mark in their last 11 on the road. New York's latest loss came on Tuesday, courtesy of a 2-1 setback at Columbus.
"We are disappointed and we are (ticked) off," said Patryk Klimala, who scored his team-leading fifth goal in the first half on Tuesday. "We talk a lot about it, but I think we have to stop talking and start working hard on the field."
The teams are meeting for the first time this season after their initially scheduled contest on July 17 was postponed due to inclement weather. The clubs split a pair of matches last season.
