QUITO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's Ministry of Health reported 2,033 cases and 68 more deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases to 398,921 and the death toll to 13,922.
Currently, 2,078 people are hospitalized, with 1,458 in stable condition and 620 with a reserved prognosis.
The provinces of Pichincha and Guayas continue to be the most affected by the disease, particularly the city of Guayas and the capital of Quito, which remains the epicenter of the virus in the country.
In 16 of the 24 provinces of the country, a state of emergency was declared on April 23, which includes the imposition of a total quarantine on the weekends to slow the spread of the disease and prevent the collapse of the health system.
According to the Ministry of Health, restrictive measures are necessary given the circulation in the country of a number of new variants.
The country is advancing in its goal of achieving the immunization of 60 percent of the population (about 9 million people) through the national vaccination program that began on Jan. 21.
As of May 6, 1,215,676 doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered.
