Statement from North Korea on nuclear capability

Argentina Star Friday 4th September, 2009

North Korea has announced it will soon be able to build a nuclear bomb.

The official Korean Central News Agency has stated that the last stage of enriching uranium has been reached.

The agency has also said while a nuclear weapon is only a short step away, it will still prepare for both sanctions and dialogue with Western countries.

It has said if the United Nations Security Council imposes more sanctions before deciding to hold talks, it will boost its nuclear deterrence capabilities.

North Korea carried out an underground test of a plutonium-based nuclear weapon in May.

The country ended its six-party talks with China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the United States earlier this year to protest UN condemnation of a long-range missile test.

It has since said it will only hold talks with the United States.

Our nuclear programmes are completely transparent. But we are ready to show greater transparency and make clear for the whole world that the steps of the Islamic Republic of Iran are completely within international frameworks. The sanctions are unfair, the Iranian people are suffering, and our (nuclear) activities are legal. These sanctions are illegal and only benefit Israel.
